The study sample included 385 students from the nursing vocational school, with 199 participants in their first-year and 186 participants in their third-year. To measure the state of EQ, this study used questionnaire surveys based on EQ instrument developed by Omura and another based on an instrument related to EQ (8 items including demographic characteristics, career motivations, and human interaction). To measure differences in EQ among school years, a t-test, and multiple regression analysis was used to measure for EQ-related factors. Results for school-year EQ score (± SD) showed that persistence, sympathy and self-awareness were significantly higher in first-year students than in third-year students. For factors related to each dimension of EQ, the four dimensions of sympathy, self-management, flexibility, and optimism were related to respondents' abilities to enjoy interpersonal interaction. This study also hypothesized that on-site practicum training within nursing education provides the opportunity for students to effectively learn the emotional aspects of the nursing profession. Though it was predicted that third-year students who completed the training would have a higher EQ score, the results of this observational study showed higher EQ scores in first-year students. Because this study was an initial cross-sectional study, further research is needed using a longitudinal design to determine differences in EQ based school
